Franchise Floor Safety: How to Standardize Non-Slip Protection Across Every Location

A customer does not judge a franchise one store at a time. One slip in one location becomes a review, a claim, and a story attached to the whole brand. That is why franchise floor safety cannot be left to each manager’s habits, mats, and cleaning products. It needs one clear standard that works in every unit, on every floor type, and that a new location can follow from opening day.

New Dimensions Solutions has made surface safety products since 1986. The system below helps franchisors, multi unit operators, and location owners turn floor safety from a local reaction into a documented brand standard.

Why One Location Doing It Well Is Not Enough

In a single site business, the owner sees the entrance on a rainy day and acts. In a franchise network, risk hides in the differences between locations. One store has ceramic tile in the washrooms, another has porcelain, a third has sealed concrete in the back, and a newer unit adds stone at the entrance. Cleaning routines, traffic, weather, and floor age all differ.

A slip rarely starts with a dramatic hazard. It starts with a wet entrance, a freshly mopped washroom, or a kitchen pass where water and grease meet tile. If only some locations treat those areas, the brand still carries the risk of the untreated ones. Standardizing protection closes that gap: every location addresses the same high risk zones, in the same order, with the same record keeping.

Franchise Floor Safety Starts With a Network Audit

Before choosing any product, audit every location against one checklist, short enough that managers will complete it and specific enough that head office can compare results.

Map the floors by zone. For each location, list the entrance, dining or retail floor, washrooms, showers if the concept includes them, kitchen or preparation areas, stairs, pool areas if present, and outdoor walkways and patios. Note the surface in each zone: tile, porcelain, concrete, stone, wood, or metal.

Mark the wet moments. Note where water arrives predictably: entrances in rain and snow, washroom floors after cleaning, shower and pool areas, dish zones, and exterior steps.

Record what is already there. Note mats, prior coatings, damaged tiles, and areas staff already avoid when wet. Photograph each zone. Those photographs become the before record.

Rank by risk, not by store. Put guest areas with wet traffic first, then staff areas with water or grease, then lower traffic exterior areas. That lets a network phase work by need, without leaving the worst floors until last.

Consider a twelve location quick service group. The audit finds the same pattern in nine units: washroom tile and entrance tile are the problem zones, while two older units also have slippery back stairs. The group does not need twelve plans. It needs one plan for washrooms and entrances applied everywhere, plus an added step for the two older units. That is standardization in practice.

Set One Product Standard That Fits Different Floors

A franchise standard fails if it only works on one surface. Managers will improvise, and the network is back to local habits.

SKID SAFE™ is an invisible non-slip coating, described by the company as a coat for any flooring. It makes wet surfaces grip on bathtubs, showers, tile, porcelain, concrete, stone, wood, and metal, and in pool areas, on stairs, and on driveways. It does not change how the floor looks or feels, which matters for brands that protect a specific interior look. That lets an operator write one standard for guest facing floors without a visible change to the finish.

Some zones need more. For floors, outdoor areas, and pool areas where extra traction is required, the NO-SLIP SKID SAFE SYSTEM™ uses ND Aggregate™ with SUPER BOND & CLEAN™ as an extra traction system. A good standard names both tiers plainly, with the choice based on the audit, not on a manager’s preference.

Hotel concepts can add the SKID SAFE™ Bathtub and Shower Tile Kits for in room work. They are retail kits with an applicator included, English and French packaging, and up to 2 years of protection. For the SKID SAFE Multi-Surface Anti-Slip Sealer system, note the coverage correctly: that system carries a 5 year warranty, and the warranty must be registered within 7 days of completed application. Do not apply that warranty to other products.

Document Every Application the Same Way

Protection that is not documented is hard to defend and hard to hand over when a manager changes. Each location should keep the same record:

  1. Location, zone, and surface treated, with before and after photographs.
  2. Product and system used, date of application, and name of the person who applied it.
  3. Warranty registration date, where that product requires registration.
  4. Reinspection date, cleaning routine for that zone, and any changes since application.
  5. Incidents and near misses in that zone, reviewed monthly.

Keep the records in one shared place for the network, not in a binder that leaves with one employee. When an insurer, a franchisor, or a claimant asks how the brand manages floor safety, that file is the answer. It also shows which locations are due for review.

Roll the standard into opening checklists for new units, training for new managers, and annual reviews. A new location should open with its wet zones already assessed, not discover them during its first rainy weekend.

Franchise floor safety works when a guest gets the same safe footing in every location, and an operator can prove it location by location. Audit once as a network, set one standard that fits the floors you actually have, and document every application the same way.
